Weather

Rating Rating Rating
While it wasn’t always shorts and t-shirt weather, and we had the wet weather gear out for one rain soaked morning, it was a warm weather regatta. The regatta is 8 days long so the full range of conditions can be expected.

Racing quality

Rating Rating Rating Rating
Top level racing. Courses are clear, starts are well organized and communicated, race committee worked well to provide good racing – even to the extent of creating a new course one day to suit the conditions. The racing is extremely competitive, so pick your class wisely

Sailing conditions

Rating Rating Rating
Great courses, good wind, plenty of interest for the navigators. Local knowledge about tides and how closely to cut corners plays an important part. While we had solid breeze most of the week (it was calm conditions for the last race) the conditions can vary significantly over the week.

Natives

Rating Rating Rating Rating
Accommodating and friendly. Everyone is there for a good time.

Social scene

Rating Rating Rating
The days of Hammo being a grotty yachty affair sponsored by XXXX are long, long gone… but I don’t really recommend Whitehaven. One bar, full of back packers shipped in from Airlie Beach and almost impossible to get back to your boat at the end of the day.

Great parties, but tended to shut down early leaving only one option – the one crowded night club. Social scene is setup for the serious sailors who go to bed early.

Cost

Rating Rating
Not as bad as some of the European locations, but it is an island so they do know how to charge for food and drink. Try and grab some of the staples (beer and water) on the mainland before travelling to the island will help reduce the cost impact.

Exotic locale

Rating Rating Rating
Tropical locations with easy access from Sydney or Brisbane. Whitsundays are a great location, but well developed and not as exotic (or with as much culture) as some of the other locations around the Pacific.

MVP: Alan Slothower, Bowman
